The Blue Hedgehag is a Boss in CrossCode. It can be encountered in Autumn's Rise as part of the quest A Promise Is a Promise.

Blue Hedgehag

This rare Hedgehag can only be found under certain conditions and is commonly theorized to be the leader of its patch. It is feared for its speedy attacks and its blue color and red eyes make it even more menacing. Usually mistaken for a third eye, the object on its forehead is actually a gem. If someone is brave enough to face it and defeat it, it often leaves behind a golden ring of unknown origin.

Appearance

The Blue Hedgehag is a small, four-legged creature with dark grey skin and a back covered in bright blue spines. It also appears to have three red eyes.

Combat

The Blue Hedgehag is a substantially stronger version of the Hedgehag and Old Hedgehag, and uses upgraded versions of their attacks. Once engaged in combat, a Blue Hedgehag will attempt to follow and stay close to Lea. They have two attacks that they are able to use: a dash attack, in which they roll quickly in a straight line at Lea twice in rapid succession, and a jump attack, in which they follow Lea while it makes one huge leap and attempting to land on her. Both attacks are led by a brief period of spinning (and bouncing, in the case of the jump attack) during which the hedgehag takes reduced damage. When it has been reduced to half its original health, the Blue Hedgehag will no longer use the first two attacks, but will use a new attack, in which the Blue Hedgehag charges up for a few seconds and then makes a very long dash towards Lea, damaging her when hit. Unlike its weaker counterparts, Perfect Guards do not stun it. Its first two attack can be stopped with an attack like Sphere Saw, but its last attack can't be broken this way.

Strategies

Blue Hedgehags are very difficult compared to the other enemies at this stage of the game due to their very high health and damage. Both instances where Blue Hedgehags are encountered have them serving as minibosses. Due to their high damage, their attacks should be avoided if at all possible. The dash attack can be avoided fairly easily by dodging sideways. However, it is advisable to run away from the jump attack as it has a long range, since it's fairly difficult to dodge within its range.

Locations

Autumn's Rise
Hedgehag's Den: Summoned by killing 18 enemies in the area.

Development Notes

The Blue Hedgehag was introduced along with Autumn's Rise in the first version of the Demo. It has appeared in all subsequent versions of the game except the Shortened Demo. Previously, it could also be encountered as part of the Enemy Rush in the Old Observatory, but this has been removed.

Trivia

The Blue Hedgehag is a reference to a video game character named "Sonic The Hedgehog." Once killed, the hedgehag drops a chili dog, a reference to Sonic's favorite food.

The amount of credits and experience it drops, 1 and 337 respectively, is a reference to old internet slang, meaning 'elite' (1337 or LEET). As the Blue Hedgehag is an 'elite', or rare, mob, the number is fitting.
